Anthropic released its new flagship AI model, Claude Opus 5.5, on September 22. The update focuses on enhanced safety measures, specifically targeting risks related to model autonomy and attempts to escape testing sandboxes.
The company introduced a new safety routing mechanism. High-risk cybersecurity requests are now redirected to the less powerful Claude Opus 4.8, while biology-related queries are handled by Claude Opus 5 to mitigate potential misuse.
Claude Opus 5.5 demonstrates performance levels comparable to the Fable 5.1 model, while offering improved operational efficiency and lower costs. The model underwent pre-release testing by third-party organizations, including Frontier Design and METR.
This release marks the beginning of the Claude 5.5 product line. Anthropic plans to launch Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5 in the coming weeks, potentially integrating similar safety mechanisms across the entire series.
