Anthropic has updated its usage policies for Claude, explicitly prohibiting systematic abuse and harassment of the AI model. Users who engage in persistent harmful behavior may face termination of their conversations with the bot. These rules are intended for extreme cases and do not apply to expressions of disagreement or creative exploration.

The company has also tightened restrictions regarding the use of its AI in sensitive areas. This includes a comprehensive ban on misleading commercial or political campaigns, such as the use of fake accounts to manipulate content reach. The policy specifically forbids using Claude to influence elections, spread disinformation about candidates, or interfere with voting processes.

New regulations expand the prohibition on developing weapons, now covering software and components for autonomous systems and drones. Additionally, Anthropic has clarified rules against using its models for surveillance, including tracking individuals without consent or assisting in law enforcement decisions regarding arrests and investigations.

For AI models connected to hardware capable of autonomous physical action, Anthropic now requires a qualified operator to monitor the equipment and maintain the ability to stop it. These updated policies are scheduled to take effect on November 12.

Anthropic continues to explore the concept of model well-being, despite skepticism from other industry players like Microsoft. While company leadership has discussed the potential for internal experience or consciousness in AI, these views remain a subject of ongoing internal research rather than established fact.
