Anthropic is currently evaluating the feasibility of developing its own internal infrastructure for billing, payments, tax, and fraud detection. This move aims to reduce the company's reliance on Stripe, which has served as its primary financial technology partner for several years.

The decision follows a period of rapid financial growth for the AI firm. Anthropic reported revenue exceeding $11.5 billion in the second quarter, a significant increase from $787 million recorded a year earlier. The company is now hiring engineers to build proprietary systems.

Stripe's existing tools have previously provided measurable benefits to Anthropic. Specifically, the Radar fraud tool reduced incorrectly blocked transactions by 83%, while the Data Pipeline feature decreased month-end reconciliation time by six days.

In contrast, OpenAI has chosen to diversify its payment processing rather than building internal systems. The company migrated stored card data to an independent intermediary and integrated Adyen alongside Stripe to avoid vendor lock-in.

Stripe recently strengthened its position by acquiring Metronome for approximately $1 billion. This platform manages over 35 billion usage events monthly. Meanwhile, Adyen expanded its capabilities by acquiring Orb for roughly $335 million in July.
