Google has introduced a secure migration system for Android that allows users to transfer login credentials directly between password managers. The process is handled entirely on the device, eliminating the need for unencrypted CSV files. Users must have both the source and destination applications installed to initiate the transfer.
To begin, users select the import option within their chosen password manager. The system then verifies the user's identity and requests confirmation to complete the move. This functionality supports both traditional passwords and passkeys, ensuring a streamlined transition even for large databases.
The feature is currently available for Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane. It relies on the Credential Transfer API, which these developers have already integrated. Google plans to expand support to additional password managers in the future, though no specific timeline has been provided.
The migration tool is integrated into Google Play Services and does not require an operating system update. It is compatible with all Google-certified Android devices running version 8.0 Oreo or higher. For managers not yet supporting the API, users must continue using manual imports or CSV files.
