BeInCrypto analyzed data from the x402 open-source payment protocol between late July and August 2026. The research identified 6.4 million recorded transactions with a total value below $120,000. Over 90% of these payments were worth less than one cent, primarily covering small fees for AI-generated safety assessments and web search requests.
The Solana blockchain processed 99.2% of the tracked transactions. A significant portion of this activity, specifically 94.5%, occurred during an eight-day period, suggesting that high transaction counts may stem from a limited number of active wallets rather than widespread business adoption.
The report includes a readiness assessment for AI agents, where micropayments scored 60.7 out of 100. Trading and investment agents received a score of 39.1, while institutional workflows reached 12. Among the 12 institutional workflows reviewed, only six could initiate or settle payments within human-defined permissions.
The study highlights that the level of financial risk depends on the capital entrusted to the software. As noted by Will Papper, Director of Product for Agent Payments at Cloudflare, the oversight required for an agent managing $10 differs significantly from one handling $1,000.
