Ameren Missouri has submitted a long-term energy strategy to the Missouri Public Service Commission. The proposal outlines a shift toward increased reliance on fossil fuels to support the power demands of data centers. The utility plans to expand its gas-burning generation capacity and extend the operational life of its existing coal-fired facilities.

The company intends to continue operations at the Labadie and Sioux coal plants. This strategic pivot coincides with the removal of carbon dioxide emissions reduction targets from the utility's promotional documentation. Ameren justifies these investments by citing the need to address extreme weather conditions, despite concerns regarding the volatility of gas prices.

The Sierra Club has raised objections to the plan, noting that the utility does not account for public health impacts or the climate consequences of methane emissions from natural gas infrastructure. The proposal arrives amid broader discussions regarding the potential repeal of the Endangerment Finding, which currently serves as the regulatory basis for greenhouse gas oversight.
