The latest AMD Adrenalin 26.9.2 driver includes a reference to an unknown chip codenamed Gainsborough. This identifier has not appeared in previous documentation, fueling speculation about its potential application in future hardware.
Technical data indicates that the Gainsborough chip utilizes an FF6 BGA package with 1179 pins. Shipment records for this component have been tracked since July, suggesting that initial test batches may have already reached partners like Valve.
The codename follows a naming convention linked to Final Fantasy VII characters. The original Steam Deck utilized the Aerith chip, while the Steam Deck OLED version features the Sephiroth chip. Gainsborough completes this thematic reference.
Valve has previously stated that the development of a second-generation console depends on achieving a significant performance boost while maintaining current battery life standards. The company is currently exploring various architectures for future portable devices.
