The altcoin market, excluding Bitcoin and stablecoins, has seen a market value decline of approximately $200 billion. This drop reverses two-thirds of the gains recorded between mid-August and late September 2026, when the segment added roughly $320 billion in value.

Data from a CryptoQuant analysis by Darkfost indicates that 70% of altcoins listed on Binance are now trading below their 200-day moving average. This marks a significant shift from early October, when nearly 90% of these assets were trading above that same indicator.

The report attributes the market downturn to macroeconomic pressures, including interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, and the Bank of England. Geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding US midterm elections have further reduced investor risk appetite.

The decline in altcoins mirrors trends in equity markets, where the Nasdaq has fallen 14% from its recent peak. While the current market sentiment is bearish, the analyst noted that extreme readings of this nature have historically preceded trend reversals in the crypto sector.
