The Live African Bitcoin Directory, managed by the African Bitcoiners community, currently lists 180 verified projects across 23 countries. This data, updated as of October 6-7, 2026, follows a recent audit aimed at removing inactive entries.
The directory reached a peak of 189 projects during the third quarter of 2026, marking a 13.2% increase from the previous 167 entries. Following this growth, curators removed 11 inactive listings and added 2 new projects to maintain the accuracy of the list.
Growth patterns varied by sector in Q3 2026. Community-focused initiatives grew by 31%, while business-oriented projects saw a more modest increase of 3.7%. The directory categorizes participants into six areas: business, community, circular economies, education, payments, and infrastructure.
The directory has been active since early 2024, when it covered 15 countries. Coverage expanded to 22 countries by late 2025, with Mauritius joining in Q2 2026. Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, and Uganda currently serve as the primary contributors to the ecosystem.
The list exclusively features Bitcoin-related technologies and services, excluding other crypto assets. Notable projects mentioned include the Proof of Work Academy in Tanzania, the Grimm App, BitcoinKids, and the South African firm SimplB.
