The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party secured 43.8% of the vote in the Saxony-Anhalt state election, marking its strongest regional performance to date. While the party did not achieve an outright majority in the 83-seat parliament, the result has renewed interest in its national platform, which includes a pro-Bitcoin agenda.
The AfD advocates for extensive deregulation of Bitcoin, trading activities, and digital wallets. In October 2025, the party filed a motion in the Bundestag proposing that the government recognize Bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset to be held during periods of monetary instability. Additionally, the party opposes the implementation of a digital euro.
Lawmakers from the AfD have also sought to ease requirements for Bitcoin under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. They argue that the current regulations are designed for centralized tokens rather than decentralized assets like Bitcoin. The party also supports maintaining existing tax exemptions for one-year Bitcoin holdings.
Despite the electoral success, the AfD faces significant hurdles in implementing its policy agenda. Mainstream German political parties continue to refuse to form a coalition with the AfD at the national level. Consequently, the party's proposals regarding cryptocurrency remain a subject of political debate rather than enacted legislation.
