The Crypto Council for Innovation and the Blockchain Association have joined forces with the Digital Chamber to challenge the legality of a new digital asset tax in Illinois. The organizations filed a request in the Circuit Court of Sangamon County seeking an expedited schedule for summary judgment to resolve the lawsuit.

Illinois officials previously agreed to delay the implementation of the 0.2% tax on crypto assets by six months, moving the effective date from January 1 to July 1, 2027. The delay followed legal action from the Digital Chamber, which argued the tax was included in the state budget without public debate.

If the court approves the proposed expedited schedule, a decision regarding the lawfulness of the tax could be reached by March. The advocacy groups aim to have the legislation struck down permanently rather than relying on the temporary enforcement pause.

In parallel with the legal proceedings, the Blockchain Association is undergoing a leadership transition. Summer Mersinger is set to step down as CEO, with former CEO Kristin Smith returning as the interim head. Mersinger is expected to remain with the organization until the end of 2026.
