Abstract, an Ethereum layer-2 blockchain focused on consumer applications, announced it will cease operations by December 15, 2026. The project, supported by Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo Inc., launched its mainnet in January 2025 with the goal of simplifying blockchain interactions for mainstream entertainment users.
Igloo Inc. CEO Luca Netz confirmed that the company funded Abstract for 18 months. Despite assembling a team and attracting major brands and a large community, the project failed to achieve product-market fit. The company reported losses totaling tens of millions of dollars over the past two years.
The shutdown follows challenges in scaling the network, including thin liquidity, a limited DeFi ecosystem, and a lack of institutional adoption. Abstract stated that its consumer-focused business model proved unsustainable, leading to the decision to close the network entirely.
Users are advised to migrate their assets off the network before the December 15 deadline using the Migration Hub or the Native Bridge. Funds remaining on the chain after this date will become inaccessible. The engineering team is currently assisting projects built on Abstract with the migration process to other blockchains.
