The Edsel brand, launched by Ford on September 4, 1957, serves as a historical example of a failed automotive nameplate. In its first year, the company sold 63,110 units. However, sales declined by nearly 30% in the following year, leading to the brand's discontinuation in 1959.

The Acura ZDX nameplate has faced multiple commercial challenges. The original crossover coupe, produced between 2009 and 2013, saw sales of fewer than 7,191 units. Acura later revived the name for an electric crossover developed in partnership with GM.

The second-generation electric ZDX featured a Type S variant with 499 hp and 544 lb-ft of torque. Pricing for the model ranged from $64,500 to $73,500, offering a range of 278 miles. Following sales of 7,391 units in 2024, production ceased in the fall of 2025.

Acura also considered reusing the RSX name for a future electric crossover model, but the company ultimately abandoned these plans.
